Historic Olde Sandwich Towne is the location for five homes to be constructed between 2023 to 2024

Picture
Olde Sandwich Town is home to some of Ontario's oldest and most historically important buildings, such as Mackenzie Hall, built by Alexander Mackenzie, a local stone-mason and builder who went on to be Canada's second Prime Minister, and the Duff Baby House, considered to be the oldest-surviving structure in all of Ontario.  Widely known for its incredible history, Sandwich is at the same time experiencing a revival in business, property and culture. New citizen investment and restoration of historical buildings have sparked up the neighbourhood over the past few years into a lovely place to live, work and visit.  West Windsor and Sandwich Town are an eclectic mixture of some of the most beautiful homes in the City,  as well as the location of the most significant need for revitalization in the planning and building of homes.  There is a marked increase in the number of building vacancies commercially as well as uninhabitable homes compared to the remainder of the City of Windsor.  The condition of many commercial and residential buildings in this area is very poor with a number of buildings boarded up, abandoned or displaying evidence of vandalism.  Yet, these lands also represent an opportunity for redevelopment that will not only improve the appearance and image of this historical community, it will also provide safe, secure and affordable home ownership opportunities for five local families who are anxious to call Sandwich Town home.  West Windsor is reclaiming its place as a beautiful local attraction providing inviting areas to eat, shop and go to school while providing an ambiance steeped in rich and important historical significance.  Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex is thrilled to be partnering with five local families to build beautiful and affordable homes in West Windsor through 2023 and 2024.

Sam

Sam is a dedicated father who loves his children more than anything in the world. His two kids, an 11-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son, both have disabilities that require him to homeschool them full-time. Despite the challenges, Sam is determined to provide his children with the best possible education and a safe, nurturing environment.

Unfortunately, Sam's current living situation is far from ideal. He and his children live in an old, run-down house in a neighborhood that is known for its high crime rate. Worse still, there is a serious mold problem that poses a significant health risk to his children.

Sam, with his supportive extended family, has tried everything he can think of to make the house habitable, but his efforts have been in vain. He simply doesn't have the money or resources to fix all the problems on his own.
Despite these challenges, Sam remains determined to provide his children with a safe, comfortable home. He advocates tirelessly for his children's rights, and is always on the lookout for new resources and support. Recently, he learned about Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex.

Sam decided to apply for homeowner partnership with Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex, and was thrilled to learn that they could help him and his children. Together, we will build a new, home for his family, one that is safe, comfortable, and suited to their needs.

Over the next several months, Sam will work closely with the Habitat for Humanity team to help build his new home, both on the construction site and at the social enterprise ReStore.

Less than ideal surroundings in their current rental mean the kids are not able to play in their yard. A new home will change everything for them.

Adriana
Adriana is a hardworking single mom who had been working at a local non-profit training organization for the past 14 years. She loves her job and is passionate about helping others.  Dedicated to her career, Adriana is challenged to provide am affordable permanent home for her two children, a 10-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son.

They are currently living in an unsafe neighborhood, where people often wander into their yard, and even worse, needles being thrown into their yard where the children play. It was a constant source of worry and anxiety for Adriana, who just wanted to provide a safe and secure home for her children.
Their current rental is overcrowded, with the three of them sharing a small two-bedroom space. Adriana works hard but could not manage to find anything more suitable and still remain affordable.
Despite all the challenges, Adriana remains determined to provide a better life for her children. She reached out Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex.

Adriana applied for the Habitat homeownership program, which requires her to complete a series of workshops and volunteer hours. She is working to be a part of the solution that will see her family finally attain the goal of affordable homeownership and a place to set down roots in our community.

With the help of Habitat volunteers, Adriana and her children will be able to build their own home in a safe and secure neighborhood. The new home will have enough space for her family, with three bedrooms, a backyard, and a front porch.
Adriana was thrilled to finally have a plan in place to provide a stable and secure home for her family.

Three more families will build in Sandwich Town in 2024...
